Dress To Impress
What you choose to wear on television will have a huge impact on how people feel about you.
Viewers are making instant judgments based on your appearance. If you appear smart and professional, viewers are less likely to be distracted and more likely to be listening to your message.
Ties are no longer essential for men, especially in the heat of summer. But a tie does send a message of authority. Wear one when you want to impress.
The one programme where you should always be seen in a suit and tie is TVNZ's morning business show - AMP Business.
A subtle tie colour (left) is more appropriate than a loud design (right). The striped tie becomes a distraction.
Colours/Designs to Avoid
Avoid white shirts and jackets. White gets washed out by TV light. It loses detail.
One of the most flattering colours against almost any skin is light blue. Most newsreaders opt for light blue shirts rather than white.
Avoid black. Like white, black loses detail. A black suit can become a solid blob of black, with no definition. Go for charcoals and navy blue rather than black. Opt for solid coloured shirts and suits and subtle ties, rather than bold or busy patterns.

Avoid busy stripes or patterns. Opt for solid colours

Avoid fine patterns like herringbone.
TVNZ studio style guide
TVNZ provides studio guests with its own guideline on clothing. The guide recommends:
"Plain coloured shirts/top/jackets are preferable and please do not wear tops which are all white, all red, black or radically striped or cross hatched. No large logos/branding on clothing. We advise female guests to arrive with makeup applied. Our make-up artist will touch up where necessary."
